Nauen is a town situated along the RE8 rail route in the German state of Brandenburg. Nauen has been experiencing steady population growth for the last 15 years, and it continues to grow. As part of our field research, we discovered that the train station is a key element in the town’s life. However, the station itself consists only of platforms and a bus stop. It lacks essential passenger amenities such as restrooms, a warm waiting hall, a shop, or even a café, and the station “square” lacks sheltered seating and consists mostly of bike and car parking. Additionally, the station is located outside of the town center, and surrounding land uses mostly include abandoned, overgrown parcels and some informal, unkempt parking lots. The goal of our project is to redesign the station and the station square to improve service quality for passengers while creating a new public space for the residents of this expanding town. The project aligns with DB’s nationwide modernization efforts and was proposed to be included in the i2030 DB Program.
